There are stories told of the Bergamasco Shepherd as far back as 2000 years. They are believed to have originated in the Bergamo region of the Italian Alps, after being traded with nomads from the Orient who were travelling west with their herds. This dog was bred for its tremendous working ability, and its flocked coat is a unique aspect of the breed, allowing it to adapt to changing climate conditions. These qualities were so prized by shepherds that they kept their bloodlines as a closely-guarded secret for many years.
In addition to its distinctive coat, the Bergamasco's temperament is highly regarded and has been created by extremely selective breeding. While it is described as "strong and brave", it is also a calm and steady dog, and has an extraordinary connection with children, demonstrating patience and tolerance. They are known to develop a deep attachment to their homes and human families, as well as their puppies, and make excellent watchdogs, while not showing any aggressiveness unless a serious threat is perceived.
