I found this very sad story on Acme Pet's Bulletin Board and felt that it should have a place in the story section of my site.
Two weeks ago in our area, an approximately seven-month-old puppy was found tied to a tree in a isolated area, where the chances of her being found were almost nil. Fortunately, the man who owned the property decided to do some tractor work on the "back 40" and found her there. She had been tied with a thin nylon rope that had cut deeply into her flesh of her neck and she was weak with hunger. The man and his wife removed the rope and rushed the pup to the vet. Our local paper ran a story on the incident and a reader responded with a poem I'd like to share with my dog-loving friends on AcmePet's bulletin board. The letter reads as follows:
Editor:
Thank you for your story about the puppy that had been tied to a tree and left to
die a slow death in an isolated location. Perhaps this poem will reach the hearts
of anyone else who is contemplating this unthinkable cruelty.
A DOG SITS WAITING A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun,
By Kathy Flood
Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.
He's been there for days now with nothing to do
but sit by the road, waiting for you.
He can't understand why you left him that day,
he thought you and he were just stopping to play.
He's sure you'll come back and that's why he stays.
How long will he suffer? How many more days?
His legs have grown weak, his throat's parched and dry;
He's sick now from hunger and falls, with a sigh.
He lays down his head and closes his eyes.
I wish you could see how a waiting dog dies.
